So how do you know that your ring may need a little care and attention? Jewellery is nearly always given for emotive reasons and the thought that it may require maintenance from time to time is one that few people realise. This ring originally came to us for sizing as it no longer fitted its owner comfortably. The ring is much loved and had been worn alongside a wedding and engagement ring for about 15 years; in that time friction had worn away both sides of the ring which can be seen in the ‘before and after’ gallery below. Whilst the extent of this wear could be seen most clearly when the ring was viewed from the side, further examination revealed wear to the settings and claws. This was not due to neglect or a ‘hard life’ but simply by normal wear over a period of time. We were able to explain to our customer how this wear occurred, which areas of the ring were affected, what the risks would be if the problems were left un-addressed and what would be required to restore the ring . We could also demonstrate how the ring would look when the restoration was complete.
In this instance all seven diamonds were removed from the ring, all the claws were replaced and the side settings were built up. In addition a replacement shank (band) was fitted to the correct finger size. Our customer was delighted when she saw the results – the ring fitted perfectly and looked just as it did when it was first given.
